Being sure of Heaven

In 1 John 5:13 we are told, I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

What are some of the things that are written that we may KNOW we have eternal life and are going to enjoy heaven?

1. Those who are heavenbound don't deny their sinfulness; in fact, they confess it. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9. Those who confess sin do not simply admit to doing wrong; they also agree with God that they deserve his punishment for their sin.

a. They realize that God does not ignore their sin but conquers it by his love. 1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

b. They see that Jesus is a "friend of sinners;" as he said, Luke 5:32, I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

2. Those who are heavenbound look to Jesus and only him for the pardon of their sins. 1 John 2:2, He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

3. Those who are heavebound begin to live for Jesus and not for themselves. 1 John 2:3-4 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. This is not to say that believers are perfect (we aren't); but it means that the focus of our lives is on pleasing God rather than pleasing ourselves.

4. The Bible says there is only one way to heaven, which is to come to God by faith in his son, Jesus. 1 John 5:12, He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. Jesus has made the one and only sacrifice that God will accept for our sins. If you have believed in Jesus by confessing your sin and trusting his sacrifice to make you right with God, then you are assured you have eternal life. If you have not put your faith in Jesus, or are not sure if you really are his, then listen to his words: Repent and believe, Mark 1:16. Whoever comes to me I will never drive away, John 6:37. As God gives you grace, will you not believe today?
